Yes, pale people can tan. It’s more difficult for them to do so because they have less melanin in their skin. Melanin is what gives skin its colour and protects it from the sun’s rays. That’s why people with darker skin don’t burn as easily; they have more melanin to provide protection. Pale people can still tan, though, it just takes a bit longer. They should start slowly, spending only a few minutes in the sun or on a sunbed each day until their skin becomes used to the UV exposure. They should also be sure to use sunscreen with a high SPF to protect themselves from burning. That’s how, over time, a pale person can tan.
